Stalin and the Cold War

Leader of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1953, this collection contain Stalin's own writings, conversations, and legacy. The documents come mostly from the 1950s, and from Russian archives. Topics discussed include Stalin's economic opinions and his views on the situation in East Germany.     Memorandum, USSR Council of Ministers to Cde. Stalin, I.V.

    Minister of State Security V. Abakumov writes to Stalin concerning the approaching court trial of leaders of the Main Directorate of Cossack Forces. The trial will take place in a closed session and the prisoners will be sentenced to death by hanging. Abakumov lists their offenses.

    Soviet Plan to Assassinate Tito

    NKVD plan to assassinate Josip Broz Tito by a Soviet covert agent, codenamed “Max.” The plan envisions assassinating Tito during a private audience during Tito’s forthcoming visit to London, or at a diplomatic reception in Belgrade. This document was not dated.

    Speech of N. S. Khrushchev at a friendly dinner in Yevksinograd (Varna), 16 May 1962

    Speaking in Bulgaria, Khrushchev discusses the cult of personality of Stalin and the great purges that occurred under Stalin's leadership. He contrasts Lenin and Stalin and the role of the communist party under each. He addresses the history and current situation of the Communist Party of Albania and the Soviet split with Albania and Yugoslavia.
