Fontes do Itamaraty e da Embaixada da China em Brasília negaram, cada qual por sua parte e separadamente, a denúncia feita em Washington pelo Senador democrata pela Califórnia Alan Cranston informando que a China está exportando tecnologia nuclar para países como o Brasil, Argentina, Paquistão, Africa do Sul e Irã. As fontes do Itamaraty consideraram a denúncia “desprovida de qualquer fundamento” e que a única coisa certa foi o tratado que o Brasil e a China assinaram no ano passado durante a visita do Presidente Figueiredo sobre energia nuclear.
Um funcionário da Embaixada chinesa a considerou “fora de propósito e que não corresponde à realidade”, acrescentando que “quem conhece um pouco da política chinesa sabe que seu país não mantém relações com a África do Sul e qual é sua posição com respeito ao apartheid. (Alvarez)

Telegram from the Argentine Embassy in Brasilia reports on US Senator Alan Cranston’s claim that China was proliferating nuclear technology to countries like Argentina, Brazil, Iran, Pakistan, and South Africa. The telegram reports that both Brazil’s Foreign Ministry and China’s Embassy in Brasilia denied the charges. Part of the telegram is hand-highlighted , where a Brazilian diplomat says that the only deal between China and Brazil was the one signed by President Figueiredo during his visit to Beijing in 1984.
