About the Explosion at Chernobyl NPP

On April 26 of this year at 1.25 AM in the building of the 4th nuclear power plant unit, after the nuclear unit had been taken offline for planned repairs and testing of the turbine generators HP No. 7 and No. 8, an explosion took place and a fire broke out. The fire also spread to the roof of the 3rd nuclear power plant unit. The explosion destroyed the tent roof of reactor HP 4 and of the turbine hall.

During the disaster, 17 laborers of the shift were in the building. Nine of them have been hospitalized, 4 laborers are severely injured, and one of them is in intensive care. The fire has been localized.

Presumably contaminated water was thrown onto the site of the nuclear power plant due to the explosion of KMPTs[iv].

The radiation level on the territory of the nuclear power plant is 20 – 25 µR/s [microroentgens/second]. In Pripyat-city the radiation level is 4 – 14 µR/s.

Because of the disaster, the 3rd nuclear power plant unit has been shut down (1st and 2nd nuclear power plant units are working normally). The power plant was put on lock down.

An executive investigative group has departed for the disaster scene. The head of the group is chief deputy of UKGB colonel Sivets G. A.

We are controlling the situation in Pripyat-city and neighboring settlements.

We will report about the reasons of the explosion and results of the investigation later.
