…New Zealand and Fiji jointly made a formal application to the United Nations for inclusion in its agenda their proposal for a nuclear-free zone in the South Pacific. In a joint memorandum to Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, they said the establishment of such a zone would contribute to the security and welfare of the people living in that area and minimize the risks to health and the environment in the region.
