KIM SANG-MAN (1910-1994). Son of Kim Seong-su, whose memory he made great efforts to preserve, and a cousin of Kim Sang-hyeop, Kim spent his entire public career as a newspaperman with the Dong-A Ilbo. He was educated at the London School of Economics, for which he retained a life-long affection, and at Waseda University in Japan. He received many honors, and was for several years chairman of the Press Foundation of Asia.

Although Kim was conservative in his political views, he opposed President Park Chung Hee's Yusin rule. In particular, he fought against press censorship, and the presence in newspaper offices of agents from the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (now the National Intelligence Service). The Dong-A Ilbo suffered as a result, with all government advertising removed for a time; Kim published the paper with blank spaces. Many of its staff were singled out for attack, but Kim did his best to defend them.

The Dong-A Ilbo also suffered following the December 1979 coup. The company's broadcasting assets and provincial publications were suppressed, and staff members were once again targeted. Many lost their jobs, but Kim Sang-man made sure that as many as possible were .given backstage or unofficial positions. Eventually, government opposition waned, and Kim was treated like an elder statesman in his later years.
