KIM SEONG-SU (1891-1955). Born into a wealthy landlord family in Gochang, North Jeolla Province, he graduated from Waseda University in Japan in 1914. In 1915, he took over a secondary school for boys in Seoul, becoming its principal in 1917. He and his brothers established a textile firm named Seoul Spinning and Weaving Company in 1919, contributing to the development of nationalistic entrepreneurial ventures.

In 1920, Kim established a new Korean-language newspaper press, publishing the Dong-A Ilbo and other Korean language publications for the purpose of maintaining Korean nationalistic spirit. After taking over Bosung College (later Korea University) in 1932, Kim became its president, training Korean youths in modem law and commercial studies. In 1947, he and other right-wing political leaders established the Korean (Hanguk) Democratic Party. He served as vice president of the National Council for Rapid Realization of Korean Independence, and when his party and another party merged into the Democratic Party in 1949, he became one of its top leaders.

In May 1951, Kim was elected by the National Assembly as vice president of the Republic, replacing vice president Yi Si-yeong, who resigned after disputes with President Syngman Rhee, but Kim, too, resigned from the position in May 1952 after bitterly criticizing Rhee's autocratic rule. After that, he served as adviser to the Democratic Nationalist Party.
