YI GU (1931-2005). The only son of the last crown prince of the Yi dynasty, which ruled Korea from 1392-1910, Yi Gu was born in Japan in 1931. His father, Yi Un (1897-1970), married the minor Japanese princess, Nashimoto Masako (1901-1989), who was known in Korea as Yi Bang-ja. She became much respected for her interest in social issues and the arts. Yi Gu qualified as an architect at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and practiced in Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Yi Gu married an American, Julia Mullock in 1959. They had no children and subsequently divorced. Yi retired to Seoul in 1996. He showed no interest in reviving a claim to the Korean throne.
