YU JIN-O (1906-1987). A graduate of Keijo (Seoul) Imperial University in 1929, Yu joined a nationalist society named Suyang Donguhoe that was formed in 1922. Becoming one of its active members, he edited its publication, Donggwang (The Eastern Light) from 1932 until Japan's colonial government abolished the society in 1939. Under Japanese pressure, Yu joined the Korean Society of Literary Persons established in 1939.

In 1946, Yu became professor of law at Korea University, and then served as director of the Office of Government Legislative Affairs from August 1948 to June 1949. After being elected as a member of the National Academy of Science in 1954, he served as president of Korea University until 1966. He became a key member of the new Masses (Minjung) Party formed in May 1965, and was elected to the National Assembly in 1966. He was nominated by his party to run in the 1967 presidential race, but he brought about the merger of his party with the New Democratic Party (NDP) of Yun Bo-seon in February 1967, making Yun the sole presidential candidate of the major opposition party. Following the establishment of the Fourth Republic in 1972, Yu retired from politics, playing the role of an elder statesman and adviser to the NDP (1970-1979) and the National Unification Board (1980-1984).
