Seoul, 27 January 1967 Dear Mr. Narasimhan, There is little to report to you this week. The domestic political situation remains calm. Having heard the President’s message and the keynote speeches of the DRP and the Minjung Party, the National Assembly is now discussing the sinking by North Korean shore batteries of the ROK fisheries protection vessel and the collision a few days beforehand between a ROK destroyer escort and a ferry boat in which about a hundred lives were lost. Preparations for the elections are now getting under way and the two major opposition parties, the Minjung and Sinhan Parties, are busily engaged in negotiations over their proposed amalgamation and the running of a single candidate against President Park Chung Hee in the forthcoming election. With kindest regards, Yours sincerely, (signature) Bedrich Syrovy Officer-in-Charge Mr. C.V. Narasimhan Chef de Cabinet United Nations New York
