Memorandum of Vadim Zagladin to Gorbachev

Memorandum of Vadim Zagladin to Gorbachev, around 6 May 1989.

On his trip to Czechoslovakia on April 31 – May 5, 1989

… Having in mind in particular your upcoming meeting with [First Secretary of the CPC Milos] Jakes, I would like to report on the situation in Czechoslovakia. Many of my meetings there are putting me in a grave mood.

Since shortly before 1968 I had worked in the CSSR (in the journal “The Problems of World and Socialism”) and during 1968 I had to deal with the Czech affairs continuously, I can compare. In general the popular mood, as well as the mood in political circles… is very similar to that I had observed back in 1965-1967, i.e. on the eve of the events of 1968.

Memorandum from Zagladin to Gorbachev on Zagladin's recent trip to Czechoslovakia, in preparation for Gorbachev's upcoming trip there.
