Memorandum from V. M. Riabikov and S. P. Korolev to N. S. Khrushchev on the State of Preparations for the First Launch of the R-7 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

Докладываем о состоянии подготовки к первому пуску межконтинентальной баллистической ракеты Р-71.[1]
1. 20 февраля с. г. на огневом стенде было впервые проведено стендовое испытание ракеты в целом (пакет). Двигательные установки пакета развивали тягу 398 тонн. При этом центральная ракета работала полный ресурс времени (283 секунды), а четыре боковых в целях предосторожности работали 20 секунд (полное время работы 115 секунд).
Испытание прошло с удовлетворительными результатами.
2. 30 марта с. г. было проведено второе испытание ракеты в целом на полный ресурс времени работы при максимальной тяге двигательных установок центральной и боковых ракет.
Работа прошла также удовлетворительно.
Эти два пуска дают возможность приступить к летным испытаниям на полигоне.
3. 2 марта с. г. с завода № 88 министерства оборонной промышленности первая летная ракета отправлена на Научно-исследовательский испытательный полигон Министерства обороны СССР. С 12 марта с. г. на полигоне ведутся подготовительные работы к запуску этой ракеты.
4. В период с 5 по 15 марта с. г. на полигон отправлены 450 специалистов для работы по подготовке ракеты к пуску. Остальной личный состав, необходимый для испытаний, отбывает в ближайшие 7-8 дней.
5. Научно-исследовательский испытательный полигон со всеми службами: стартовой позицией, технической позицией, средствами измерения и наблюдения за полетом, средствами связи по всей трассе полета, средствами управления ракетой в полете и другими службами к первому пуску ракеты готов.

6. Комиссия по проведению испытаний ракеты с августа 1956 г. ведет систематическую работу по подготовке к пуску и 10-15 апреля с. г. отбывает на место испытаний.
О дате готовности к пуску доложим с места испытаний.

We are reporting about the state of preparations for the first launch of the R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile.[1]
1. On 20 February of this year a [static] stand test of the missile (cluster) as a whole was conducted on a [static] firing stand for the first time. The propulsion systems of the cluster developed a thrust of 398 tons. While this was done the central rocket operated for a full time span (283 seconds), and four side [rockets] operated for 20 seconds (full time of operation 115 seconds) as a precaution.
The test passed with satisfactory results.
2. On 30 March a second test of the missile as a whole was conducted for the full time span at the maximum thrust of the propulsion systems of the central and side rockets.
The test also went satisfactorily.
These two firings provide an opportunity to begin flight tests at a test range.
3. The first flight [model] of the rocket was sent from Plant Nº 88 of the Ministry of the Defense Industry to a Scientific-Research Test Range of the USSR Ministry of Defense on 2 March of this year. Preparatory work to launch this rocket has been carried out at the test range since 12 March.
4. Four hundred and fifty specialists were sent to the test range between 5 and 15 March to work on preparing the rocket for launch. The remaining personnel needed for tests will leave in the next 7-8 days.
5. The Scientific-Research Test Range with all the services – launch site, maintenance area, instrumentation and flight observation, communications equipment along the entire flight path, in-flight missile control equipment, and other services – are ready for the first launch of the rocket.
6. Since August 1956 the commission to conduct the rocket tests has been performing systematic work to prepare for the launch and is going to the test location between 10 and 15 April.
We will report the date of readiness for launch from the test site.
