Д о к л а д ы в а е м:

TO THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF THE
Communist PARTY OF THE SOVIET UNION

We report:

The first experimental launch of an R-7 rocket was made on 15 May 1957 at 1905 Moscow time.

According to the program the task of the first launch was: verification of the launch equipment and the separation of the first and second stages of the rocket.

The preliminary results of the launch are as follows: the rocket launch went normally and for the first 70 seconds the flight of the rocket went along a trajectory close to the one planned. The subsequent flight was abnormal as a consequence of malfunctions which arose on board the rocket, and at 103 seconds the propulsion system of the rocket switched off with the aid of the automatic system designed for emergency cases.

On 16 May 1957 two of the five parts of the rocket were found downrange 300 km of the launch [site] and 10 km to the left. The search for the remaining three parts continues.

It is necessary to interpret and process about 20 km of oscillograph film with recordings of various parameters of the rocket made during the launch and flight to finally establish the reasons for the abnormal flight of the rocket. After this a decision will be made about the launch of the next rocket.
