Dear Father White:
Thank you for your letter of October 15th, which I read with interest and admiration for your devotion to the welfare of the people of South Korea.
It has been, and is, my personal preference not to encourage the building of any memorials or monuments to me. I consider that whatever useful acts may have been performed during my administration were in fact the acts of the American people.
I hope that you will understand why I cannot do as you request. You have my best wishes in your chosen work.
