YI BEOM-SEOK (1900-1972). Born in Seoul, he fled to China in 1915. After graduating from a Chinese military school in 1919, he joined the Korean army in Manchuria, participating in the anti-Japanese Cheongsanri battle of 1920. In 1933, he became commander of the Korean military unit at the Chinese Nationalists' Loyang Military Academy, and in 1941, he became chief of staff of the Korean Restoration Army in China, engaged in the war against Japan on the side of the Chinese Nationalists.

Yi returned to Korea in August 1945. In October 1946, he formed the National Youth Corps. In 1948, he became the first prime minister and concurrently the minister of defense of the newly established Republic of Korea. After serving as ambassador to Nationalist China in 1950, Yi became vice president of the Liberal Party and was named the minister of home affairs in April 1952. He was nominated by the Liberal Party as its vice presidential candidate, but failed to get elected. He tried again in 1954, but was again defeated. When the House of Councilors was established in 1960, he ran for office and was elected. In 1963, he formed the Party of the People, but thereafter played only a minor role in politics.
