The Gazette of the State Council of the People's Republic of China (Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo guowuyuan gongbao; 中华人民共和国国务院公报) is a compendium of press releases and administrative decisions relating to developments in Chinese foreign and domestic policy.
Published for the first time in 1955, issues of the State Council Gazette usually appeared several times each month. Entries in the gazettes offer information about Chinese foreign relations (including notices of meetings between Chinese and foreign leaders, texts of international agreements, and protests against actions deemed contrary to the interests of China and the Chinese people) as well as notices and policy announcements concerning administrative changes and economic matters that were promulgated by the State Council.
The Gazette was in print from 1955 until the Cultural Revolution began in May 1966. Production resumed in 1980, four years after the Cultural Revolution ended. It is still produced by the General Office of the State Council and circulated for domestic and foreign consumption today.
Although much of the information contained in the Gazette can be found elsewhere (such as in state media publications), it is an important reference resource that allows researchers to follow the ebb and flow of Chinese politics, economics, and foreign relations under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party.
This Wilson Center Digital Archive resource includes facsimile copies of the earliest issues of the Gazette. Each issue features a concise English-language description as well as descriptive metadata and tagging (such as people, places, topics, and subjects) that allow users to filter through a large body of data and to find information relevant to their own interests.
