Today, 21 October 1978, at 12 p.m., the general director of Production Association “Sever” reported to the Ministry that on 20 October at 23 hours 52 minutes, 18 miles northwest of the Kolguyev island, a barge with radioactive waste from atomic submarines being repaired at the ship repair plant in Severodvinsk sank at a depth of 45 m.
The barge was towed to near the Novaya Zemlya islands and was subjected to scuttling along with the radioactive waste.
In order to uncover the reasons for the unauthorized sinking of the barge and to develop necessary measures, Minsudprom has created a special commission jointly with the Navy.
The results of the work of the joint commission will be further reported to the CPSU CC.
